Blogging Resources
If you’re starting a blog, working at a blog or just seeking out some resources and inspiration I have a few to share with you.

Writing Tips

Remarkable Communications – One of the Top Ten Blogs for Writers last year, Sonia Simone’s writing tips will help you stand out on the web.

Copyblogger – Copywriting tips from Brian Clark and his friends. Want to read a well written, a well-crafted blog post? Check out this blog and pay attention to the anatomy of a blog post. In fact here’s a great post on how to increase

Human Business Works
– and Chris Brogan – A pro-blogger himself Chris Brogan often shares tips, strategies and behind-the-scenes details on how to grow your blog and attract subscribers.

Building Resources

Blogger.com – Googles’ free do it yourself resource for building a blog and hosting it.

WordPress.com – Is an Open Source software meaning it’s free for anyone to use and modify to meet their personal needs. Since it’s free, it does have limitations.

WordPress.org
– provides the software for you to create your blog. It’s very user friendly but does take a fair amount of technical and design expertise to get it to look and function exactly the way you want. WordPress.org also does not offer hosting. This option provides maximum flexibility and customization.

Typepad.com – Another popular blogging platform. Less “bells and whistles” than WordPress but that also means it’s easier to customize. A limited number of layout and design options.

Building Blocks

My Domain.com – Great resource to purchase and manage your domain names. Their backend is simple and straightforward, they aren’t trying to up sell you on each new screen and their customer service is really good.

GoDaddy.com – GoDaddy offers hosting and domain name purchasing. They’re not my favorite from a customer service perspective but they’re inexpensive. Constantly trying to up sell you and if you’re not careful you’ll buy something you surely don’t need.

BlueHost.com – A great value for web hosting. Excellent customer service.

Custom Resources

Want to stand out online? Take the custom route.

videoBIO.com – Create your own 2 to 3 minute video and put it on your site. It’s a great way to personalize your blog.

Kirsten Dixson – Provides custom blog design services for career success.

Sue Brettell – Provides design and copywriting services.

brandiD – Specializing in WordPress custom blog design and construction services by “making the web more personal™.” brandiD can also help you create buzz and visibility online for you and your business. Disclaimer (this is my “day” job!)

Whether you’re an entrepreneur or a job seeker learn about the latest and greatest tools to help you succeed.

A Must-Have App for Building a Stellar LinkedIn Profile

LinkedIn is a leading-edge tool for people in a job search as well as for business owners. I recently saw a video that Jason Alba (author of “I’m on LinkedIn—Now What???”) on Marketing Profs’ “Take 10” series. The training module focused on the “Must-Have Apps for Showcasing Your Expertise on LinkedIn.”

The one app that captured my attention gave you the ability to incorporate video on your LinkedIn profile. In personal branding, William Arruda discusses the importance of building quality, on-brand Google results that contain not only results in writing, but also in pictures and videos.

If you have a video presentation, (see Walter Akana’s profile as an example), or another type of video that showcases your personal brand and expertise, then sharing it on your LinkedIn profile is a valuable tool for you.

10 Steps to Posting a Video to Your Profile

      1. Once you sign in your LinkedIn account, go to the toolbar and find “More.” Select either “Applications or “Get More Applications.”
      2. Choose “Google Presentations.”

      3. Once you install the Google Presentations’ application, select “Go to Application.”
      4. From this page, you will be prompted to go to your Google account sign-in page.
      5. On the left-hand side of your Google Docs page, select “Create New” and then select “Presentation.”
      6. Select “Insert” and then click “Video” (your video will need to be uploaded to YouTube).

      7. Search for your video and select to be inserted into the slide.
      8. Title your video and save.
      9. Return to LinkedIn and select the hyperlinked title of your presentation to share.
      10. Lastly, click “Post to Profile.” Voila! You now have the ability to showcase your video presentation directly on your LinkedIn profile.

Commercial Break
By William Arruda

What can personal branders learn from TV advertisements? Take a break and take a peak.

Westin: Who’s He Sleeping With?

I love this commercial because: This ad is beautifully done in sepia tone images with clever copy (listen to what the narrator says). It was developed with the singular goal of differentiating Westin from other hotel brands as a hotel for serious business people (this ad was launched in 1998). A decade later, Westin’s brand is now focused on renewal – leaving feeling better than when you arrived (Disclosure: Starwood Hotels, Westin’s parent company is a Reach client).

This ad and YOUR personal brand: What differentiates you from everyone else who does what you do – those who share your job title or your career goals?

William Arruda Interviews Jordan Friedman aka The Stress Coach

Date: Thursday, November 11, 2010

9:00 AM Los Angeles, 12:00 PM New York,
5:00 PM London, 6:00 PM Paris

Leadership Is Stress Management
William Arruda’s conversation with stress-to-success guru Jordan Friedman was 2009’s most downloaded Reach interview. And since stress is probably still impacting your brand and potential in 2010, William is bringing Jordan back—this time to tell us why leadership and stress reduction are the same thing.

It’s no accident that most CEOs are Type B’s with cool and calm work styles, versus many of us Type A’s who are not that way. Is your stress compromising your health and success? Would you like to manage it more like a corporate head than a headless chicken? If you answered or clucked, “Yes,” join William and Jordan on Thursday, November 11, 2010 for the Reach Personal Branding Interview Series. It promises to be another lively and motivating discussion full of actionable strategies for you and those you want to help.

In this interview, which will be recorded, you will learn:

  • About the relationship between personal branding and stress,
  • Why leadership and stress management are the same thing,
  • Reasons why people feel so stressed today,
  • A simple litmus test for all stress reduction strategies,
  • The best way to start managing stress,
  • The 5 essential leadership practices that are also key stress reduction activities, and
  • How coaches and educators can use stress control concepts and tools in their work.

Sign up for the interview with Jordan Friedman and William Arruda soon. We rarely have guests on twice, but have decided to do this with our most popular past guests. Since we have a limited number of phone lines, we know registration will fill up quickly for this call.

He’s done just this for thousands from 9/11 survivors and CEOs to NYPD officers and Federal prison inmates.

A pioneering stress management speaker and educator, Jordan also created the innovative Stressbusters program. It is a continuous and celebrated stress reducer for students and staff at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, the University of Missouri and other institutions.

Jordan’s work has been quoted and promoted by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Entrepreneur, National Public Radio and O Magazine among others. As longtime director of Columbia’s health education program, Jordan penned hundreds of Internet and newspaper columns on everything from burnout prevention to employee retention. William ArrudaWilliam’s Words
By William Arruda

A note from the Founder of Reach Personal Branding.

Can a Brand Change its Spots?

I was speaking with Ora Shtull, a certified Reach Personal Branding Strategist, recently about her focus on the New York City market. She’s a successful Executive Coach with a really strong brand and a unique way of working with clients. Her target market is crystal-clear – senior executives in NY’s leading companies. And, she is known for her face-to-face work that delivers tangible results. I refer to her as New York’s in-person coach. Most coaches do a lot of their work by phone, and Ora’s commitment to face-to-face coaching sessions is highly differentiating.

Recently, an opportunity presented itself to her – a competition that might allow her to extend her brand globally. Ora wondered if she could be true to her well-established NYC brand while potentially moving in a new direction. Her video entry into the competition proves that strong brands can grow in new directions while maintaining their authenticity, differentiation, and relevance. Take a look here!

Gratitude Affects Attitude

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”
 – William Arthur Ward

What a great time of the year to think about what we’re grateful for! But alas, how much of our time do we spend thinking of “what’s missing” in our lives?

No, I’m not a pollyanna. I can whine right along with the best of ‘em about how business is down, kids aren’t calling enough, losses in my life, etc, etc. Consider the statistic that only 7% of people who work are fulfilled in their role. Consider the fact that 75% of the messages we hear every day are negative. No wonder it’s so easy to moan and groan — over real things!

After a recent keynote speech, a woman came up to me and said, “Do you always smile so much? I never see you at this conference without a smile on your face!”

I wasn’t sure where she was going with this comment so I simply answered her questions! “Well, I’ve certainly had reasons NOT to smile, but I tried throwing a pity party and it didn’t work. I was the only person who came—so it seemed to me that I’d attract more people if I kept a pleasant look on my face… and these days I’d rather use fewer facial muscles with a smile than risk getting more wrinkles with a frown.”

This Thanksgiving season, how about considering one thing you can be grateful for each morning before you even get out of bed? It’s not that difficult. How about, “I’m grateful I CAN get out of bed this morning.” You get the picture. Try it and you’ll see why the letters attached to the word ATTITUDE add up to 100 in the alphabet, meaning Attitude IS 100% of everything we do.

Commercial Break
By William Arruda

What can personal branders learn from TV advertisements? Take a break and take a peak.

IBM, Intel, GE: Three Related Commercials

This commercial break is actually three in one!

I love these commercials because: I believe it is the human brand assets that make the difference between good companies and great companies. I also believe that the organizations that invest in their human capital (engaging and inspiring their people) receive an incredible return on that investment in terms of commitment, retention, and promotion. These ads show companies that understand that employees are becoming more and more important brand assets; these companies decided to showcase their employees – a great way to build emotional connections with viewers.

These ads and YOUR personal brand: Do executives in your company say ‘employees are our greatest asset’ or do they believe it? How can you influence how your company looks at its talent? Are you engaged in your company’s mission?

MOJO: A New Approach to Increasing Engagement at Work and at Home
Why do some people find their lives so joyous and meaningful, while others, who are engaged in very similar activities, find their lives depressing and empty? In the Reach Personal Branding Interview Series on December 16, 2011, Dr. Marshall Goldsmith will address that very question. William Arruda, founder of Reach Personal Branding, will be interviewing Dr. Goldsmith, a world authority in helping successful leaders achieve positive, lasting change in behavior for themselves, their people and their teams.

Dr. Goldsmith will explore the key factors that influence our MOJO, that positive spirit toward what we are doing now that starts from the inside and radiates to the outside. He will talk about how we can help ourselves and the people around us experience more happiness and meaning both at work and at home.

In this interview, which will be recorded, you will learn:

  • Dr. Goldsmith’s definition of MOJO,
  • What constitutes the four building blocks of MOJO,
  • What shapes our identity and MOJO,
  • The MOJO definition of achievement,
  • Why we are often clueless about our reputation and MOJO, and
  • Why having MOJO is important in our lives.

Sign up for the interview with Dr. Marshall Goldsmith and William Arruda. We anticipate that registration for this call will fill quickly.
